1) Soy contains phytoestrogens, which the body recognizes as estrogens - not good if you're a man, and really not good if you're a woman. Many female cancers are estrogen sensitive.
2) Soy is goitrogenic, meaning that it slows down your thyroid, which is a good possibility for why weight loss can be hampered if you use a lot of soy.
(I'm obviously no expert on the pros and cons of soy. This is just what I've read.)
Since I'm not using soy, I'm so glad to have found the almond milk. It's a pretty good substitute for both dairy and soy. Almond Breeze is the brand I'm using...I've tried Almond Dream too, but I don't like it as well. Almond Breeze has 1 more gram of fat and 1 fewer gram of carbs than the Almond Dream, which I think is why it tastes better. And it fits in better to the low carb idea anyway.

Good move giving up soy milk. It is not a very healthy product. No almond milk available, here, so I have been experimenting with making my own.
ReplyDeleteSilk makes a fabulous almond milk also. Our latest find is coconut milk.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I found your blog through a friend of a friend. Your sweetest dog does look sweet.
ReplyDeleteI heard that same thing about soy and estrogen. A friend of mine that went through breast cancer and a radical mastectomy told me that soy was bad. Her doctor had forbidden her from eating it because of the estrogen factor. I figured if it was bad for someone that had gone through cancer, maybe it wasn't so good for someone that didn't have cancer. Why take the chance? So I quit eating or drinking soy a couple years ago.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about it affecting the thyroid. That's very interesting, and even more reason to not eat it. Funny how you don't much about this in the press.
I switched to almond milk because I am hypothyroid. It's fantastic in smoothies. I like how you've compared the two main brands. Helpful!
ReplyDeleteThe thing about soy and cancer is complicated as forms of soy vary. Dr. Weil has some info on that.
Thanks Grace for your concern, I am so distracted I left an answer to your comment on my blog instead of yours so I am commenting here too.
ReplyDeletePoor Christchurch has been going through hell wth constant aftershocks since the big one in September last year which caused a lot of structural damage but no deaths. This one seems to be a new fault and not an aftershock and it has caused a huge amount of damage, death and injury. Not much news coming through so far.
I lived in Chch years ago when I was a student. It is a lovely city. This is a tragedy.
I love unsweetened Almond Breeze vanilla - so good. Now, Silk is making almond milk too, at only 35 calories per 8 oz. Not quite as flavorful as Almond Breeze but still pretty tasty. So glad for these other alternatives.
