Awww...

DIANA and FATINAH, thank you both for the Beautiful Blogger award. Sorry it took me so long to get around to acknowledging it.

I usually ignore awards...for many reasons. But, I've been trying to do things outside of my comfort zone and striving to be a more open person. So I'm accepting this award...again, thank you!

So, the rules are you have to tell 7 things about you that people might not know. The only way I could come up with anything was to go through my old pictures. Then I thought...I'm using the pictures to come up with the ideas, I might as well include the pictures in my post.

So here it is...my "7 things in pictures" (you can click to enlarge):

1. I play the bagpipes and the Scottish side drum and was in a bagpipe band in college.

That's me (the tall one) smiling at the camera

2 - When I was in my early 20's, I worked for a company that was a subsidiary of Pan American World Airways, and one of the perks was flight benefits. As a result I've been to many different countries, sometimes for only a day or two! One of my favorite trips was to go with friends to London for the weekend.

3 - When I became a firefighter in 1980, I was the only woman in my department. It took the guys a while to figure out I wasn't a "women's libber" (their term, not mine) or trying to make a statement …I just wanted a job.

4 - I have studied and collected antique jewelry for several years, and I've attended "Jewelry Camp" in New York and Rhode Island. I especially love the Victorian era. My pride and joy is a salamander brooch, from about 1890, made of gold, demantoid garnets, and diamonds, with ruby eyes. Look at his little feet...such detail...what incredible workmanship!

5 - I'm extremely allergic to a lot of animals, including birds, cats, and horses. (Fortunately, not dogs!!) I can walk into a house and know if they have cats because I start to itch and have trouble breathing within a minute. I love cats, so I used to actually have one until my asthma got so bad that I was always wired on asthma medicine. This sweet little Siamese kitty below ended up living with my parents because I couldn't keep her. Then I found out I was allergic to horses when I was doing an inspection at a stable, and started having an asthma attack. I'd never been around horses before so I was totally unaware that I was allergic to them...

I loved my kitty, but...What was I thinking???

6 - I went to Catholic school from kindergarten until 8th grade and I loved it. This must be the reason my girlfriends all tell me that I'm so "catholic."

The good girl...8th Grade Graduation

7 - As a result of some charity work I did in the early 1980's, I became an honorary Sea Fair pirate princess.

Pirate Princess...Aaaargh!

So, here are my picks for passing on the Beautiful Blogger award...

I know some of you have already been given this award by other bloggers, but you're getting it again from ME...because you are all Beautiful to ME!

  1. What a wonderful treat - to get to peek into the past life of G! I'm even more impressed. Girl, what a life you've lived. I'm awestruck. The bagpipes? Seriously? That is the very reason I love parades in the PNW - the Scottish bands/bagpipes. I absolutely adore them. Not everyone gets this, but I am sure that you do. Beautiful!

And not everyone gets the Sea Fair princess deal, but I do. Again, color me impressed. And the firefighter pic? Just wow. I had no idea that you were such a trailblazer. I mean, I'd picked up from reading that you were affiliated with the department, but had no idea you'd come up through the ranks like this - and at a time when it's wasn't the norm. Good on you!

I'd gush some more, but I've got to track down some books! Thanks for those and for passing on the award. You are just as beautiful now as you were then.

    Have a great weekend!

  2. Oh, I love this! Wow! These are first, some awesome pictures and you know how I love pictures - life in vivid colors! You are one incredible woman, Graciela. I love the bagpipes and drums. I love that you became a firefighter - they are my heroes, that makes you a hero in my eyes, too.

It's so wonderful to learn more about you. You are beautiful, inside and out! Thanks for sharing it with us. And thank you for the award. I'll post my 7 things soon and pass it on.

    Have a wonderful day!

  3. I love the picture journal.

Thank you so much for awarding me. Your words brought tears.

You're wonderful and you've done all the hard work yourself, I've just been, from afar, holding your hand while you do.

    Love and hugs

  5. P.S. My 11 year old son took up bag pipes this year. We have no history with the instrument, he was simply drawn to them. He's crazy about tartan too. Right now he's just on a practice chanter, but hoping for pipes this Spring. The world's most famous bag pipe maker is down the street from us...Dunbar Pipes.

  6. I love it!
I have a little practice chanter and had really worked hard on learning the bagpipes....I was a music major in college - drums....I think i'd better "stick" with drumming!
    You have a great life!

  8. You are fascinating! I LOVE the bagpipes, I mean totally love them!

I love all your pictures but my favorite is the one of you as a firefighter. That is just way cool. Plus you're so pretty. Just gorgeous in all the pics.

About your mom, wow, that explains so much about you food issues. She sure sounds like she could have used some therapy herself.

Isn't it funny what people think is pretty? There's a picture of Kathryn McPhee (I have no idea who she is--singer, tv star, ??) - on the cover of this month's Shape magaine. She looks like a freak. I'm sure they must have photoshopped the picture, but it looks like her shoulder bone could poke out an eye. Ugliest thing I've ever seen. Makes me sick she's on the cover. I think of all the young women striving to look like that. So sad.

    Loved this post!
